Bournemouth town centre has no switch-on ceremony: its lights come on when Christmas in Bournemouth opens on 12 November. Westbourne's 2026 date is still due.

Is there a Bournemouth Christmas lights switch-on in 2026? Not in the town centre. There is no ceremony with a stage and a celebrity. The town centre lights are part of Christmas in Bournemouth, which opens on Thursday 12 November 2026 and runs to Sunday 3 January 2027, according to the operator.

The switch-on people remember is the local one in Westbourne, run by Bournemouth Coastal BID. Last year Harry Redknapp and the Mayor of Bournemouth pressed the button. The 2026 date has not been announced yet.

The town centre: the lights arrive with the market

BCP Council’s own list of Christmas 2025 events describes the town centre this way: the Christmas market, the Lower Gardens attractions, and “new and interactive installations in The Triangle, Westover Road, Beale Place, Horseshoe Common and Lansdowne”. It adds that “the Town Centre BID is also funding the lamppost Christmas lights within the town centre”.

That list has a switch-on for Christchurch and for Poole. It has none for central Bournemouth, and nothing published since has changed that.

For 2026 the operator’s site gives “Opening 12th November - Closing January 3rd (Market Stalls Close 31st)”, and entry is free. Our Bournemouth Christmas market page has the hours, the ice rink prices and the planning application for the years after this one.

Westbourne Christmas tree light switch-on

This is the closest thing Bournemouth has to a traditional switch-on, and it is inside the town, in BH4.

What Bournemouth Coastal BID published for 2025:

  • Saturday 29 November 2025, 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
  • Harry Redknapp and the Mayor of Bournemouth switched on the lights.
  • The Funky Little Choir led a singalong, and Santa was “flying in” for photos.
  • Westbourne’s traders paid for extra lights on the high street themselves, which the BID describes as “a gift to the community from the traders themselves”.

2026: not yet announced. The BID’s events list has no Westbourne Christmas page for this year. Last year’s page went up on 5 November, about three weeks before the evening, so expect the date in early November. A late-November Saturday is the pattern, but that is our expectation, not a published date. We will add it here when it appears.

The other Christmas days in Bournemouth’s districts

Coastal BID runs Christmas events in its other districts too. Neither has a 2026 date yet, so these are last year’s details.

  • Christmas on the Green, Southbourne: Saturday 13 December 2025 on Southbourne Green, with live music all day, the Bournemouth Goats, festive donkeys and Santa.
  • Santa’s Grotto, Boscombe: at the Sovereign Centre, presented by Rotary, on set dates from 6 to 23 December 2025, usually 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and 10am to 3pm on Sundays.
  • Kinson Community Centre Christmas fair: Saturday 13 December 2025, more than 50 stalls over three halls and a £2 Santa’s grotto, cash only, according to BCP’s list.

If you want a big switch-on, go to Poole or Christchurch

Both neighbouring towns hold a proper switch-on, and both are a short trip from Bournemouth.

  • Christchurch: Christchurch Town Council’s event page for 2025 gives Saturday 22 November 2025, 11am to 7pm, on the High Street. The 2026 date is not on its site yet.
  • Poole: BCP’s 2025 list says the town centre and quay were lit from 22 November to 1 January, “with the Santa Parade and Light Switch-on kicking off the season”. No 2026 date has been published.

Getting there and parking

Westbourne’s shops are along Poole Road and Seamoor Road, and the BID has not published any parking advice for the switch-on, so allow time to find a space on a Saturday evening. Before you set off, check roadworks and travel, because town centre bus improvement works have put several central roads under a temporary traffic order this year.
